Hemal Shah is a Distinguished Engineer and Systems/Software/Standards architect in the Compute and Connectivity (CCX) division at Broadcom Inc. He leads a team of architects. In his role, he is responsible for the product architecture definition of Ethernet NIC products, NIC integration in SoCs and Smart NICs, and software roadmap for performance NICs and Smart NICs. Hemal spearheaded the system architecture and features development of Broadcom’s TruFlowTM and TruManageTM technologies. He led the development of Broadcom NIC based solutions for vSwitch acceleration and packet processing software frameworks including OvS, vRouter, DPDK, and XDP. Hemal has been the critical driving force behind the architecture of Broadcom’s industry leading system management, stateless offloads, virtualization, security, and network management features deployed in several generations of multiple server and client NIC product lines. Before joining Broadcom in 2005, Hemal worked at Intel Corporation where he led the development of system/silicon/software architecture of communication processors, 10 Gigabit Ethernet controllers, and TCP/iSCSI/RDMA/IPsec/SSL/firewall/VPN acceleration solutions.

Hemal is the lead technical representative/contributor from Broadcom Inc. in the Open Compute Project (OCP) and Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF). Hemal is one of the key authors of OCP NIC 3.0 specification. In the OCP, Hemal serves as a project co-lead of Hardware Management project. In the DMTF, Hemal has served in various leadership roles in the last 14 years. Hemal currently serves as Senior VP of Technology in the DMTF. Hemal has been a critical driving force behind the development of numerous OCP and DMTF standards related to hardware management, system management, virtualization management, and cloud infrastructure management.

Hemal is a renowned expert in several areas including high-speed networking, distributed system architectures, system management, virtual networking, web services, storage networking, protocol offloading, cloud computing, and system software. Hemal has co-authored several OCP specifications, 70+ DMTF specifications, four IETF RFCs, and 10 plus technical conference/journal papers. Hemal is a named inventor on 40+ patents with several pending patents. Hemal holds Ph. D. (computer engineering) and M.S. (computer science) degrees from Purdue University, M.S.E.E. degree from The University of Arizona, and B.S. (electronics and communication engineering) degree from Gujarat University, India.
