Today SONiC mainly supports a subset of OCP networking devices specific to the needs of the hyper-scale community. Using Open Network Linux’s platform layer in SONiC increases the reach of SONiC by providing more hardware options, required by a broader set of organizations. Any networking device supported in ONL using a networking chip supported by SAI can be supported for SONiC. For example as demonstrated at the last OCP summit, a combination of SONiC + ONL allowed NTT to demonstrate the Edge-Core Cassini system running SONiC as the data-plane. SONiC + ONL enables SONiC support on wide array of hardware platforms and use cases, thus accelerating its adoption, including SaaS, cloud, managed SP and telco data centers.
